NO BHA LLC REGISTRATION NUMBER REQUIRED FOR DOGS TO PARTICIPATE. FUN TESTS DO NOT RESULT IN DOGS QUALIFYING FOR BHA TITLES.  Be a part of the exciting new sport of Barn Hunt! Barn Hunts have been held informally at Earth Dog events for years, but never under consolidated rules as a titling event.

Barn Hunt is based on the hunting and teamwork skills historically used by “Ratcatchers” who traveled the countryside with their dogs ridding farms of vermin, thus helping to conserve and preserve stored crops and protect inhabitants from disease.

The purpose of Barn Hunt is to demonstrate a dog’s vermin hunting ability in finding and marking rats in a “barn-like” setting, using straw/hay bales to introduce climbing and tunneling obstacles in the dog’s path. Barn Hunt is for any breed or mix of dog over 6 months of age who can fit through an 18” wide by bale-height (approximately 22”) tunnel constructed of straw/hay bales. It tests speed, agility, hunt drive, scenting ability, and surefootedness. Barn Hunt is a sporting event, and as such there are levels of difficulty, titles, and championships to be attained. While it can be used as an instinct test, there is also a handler component in that the handler must signal when the dog has reached the desired target (PVC tube with a rat in it); thus the handler must know and have a partnership with their dog.

Pre-entries close 5:00 pm, Thursday, September 5. Day of test entries allowed if space is available. Entries limited to 120 runs each day.

A Judge’s Briefing to handlers will be conducted prior to the start of tests.

Classes Offered: Rat Instinct Class (RATI) - Three PVC tubes will be placed within the course in plain

sight, one dry, one with litter but no rat, and one with both litter and a rat.Dog must indicate the tube with the rat. Time 1 minute. Novice Barn Hunt (RATN) – Three PVC tubes will be placed in the bales, one dry, one with litter but no rat, and one with both litter and a rat. Time stops when the dog and handler indicate the rat AND the dog has executed both a tunneling and climbing effort. Time 2 minutes.

Open Barn Hunt (RATO) – Five PVC tubes will be placed in the bales, one dry, two with litter, two with litter and rats. Time stops when the dog and handler indicate both rats and the dog has executed both the tunneling and climbing effort. Course is more complex than RATN with 1-2 tunnels and a higher level of bales. At least one rat tube can only be reached with a climbing effort. Time 2 minutes, 30 seconds.

Exhibitor Information: A current copy of the BHA Rule Book can be found at http:/ A complete description of each class is provided as well as what constitutes penalties and disqualification criteria by the dog or handler.

All dogs must be on a short leash and under control while on event grounds except when showing. Flexi-leads, electronic collars and devices, choke chains, prong collars and head halters are not allowed on the event grounds.

Dogs must run “naked,” without collar or harness. Dogs should be brought to the ring with a collar or harness that can be easily and quickly removed and replaced. Bitches in season must wear pants.
